About Druk White Lotus School

The Druk White Lotus School at Shey, near Leh, is an internationally celebrated educational institution that inspired the 2011 film Rockstar. Designed by Arup Associates and built in phases from 2001, the school uses traditional Ladakhi building materials and forms combined with modern structural engineering and sustainable technology — solar power, passive heating, earthquake resistance. It won the World Architecture Festival Award and RIBA Award. The school provides modern, English-medium education to local Ladakhi children while ensuring they remain rooted in their Buddhist and Ladakhi heritage. The beautifully harmonious campus, with its iconic lotus-shaped layout in the high-altitude desert, is a masterwork of contextual architecture.
