About Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery is a large Gelugpa Buddhist monastery in the Indus Valley, 19 km east of Leh. Rising 12 storeys on a hilltop, it is often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa for its commanding appearance and architectural grandeur. The monastery was founded in the 15th century and is home to approximately 60 monks. It houses a remarkable collection of Buddhist art — chortens (stupas), thangkas (scroll paintings), swords, statues, and wall paintings. The highlight is a two-storey-high Maitreya Buddha statue built in 1980 in honour of the Dalai Lama. The morning puja (prayer ceremony) at dawn is a deeply atmospheric experience open to respectful visitors.
