Leh is the capital city of the Union Territory of Ladakh, perched at an altitude of 3,524 metres in the Himalayas. Once a major hub on the Silk Road, it is today a thriving traveller's base camp with a magnetic old-town quarter, colourful markets, and some of the finest Tibetan Buddhist heritage in India. The iconic Leh Palace towers above the city, offering panoramic views of the Zanskar range, while the shimmering white dome of Shanti Stupa lights up the hilltop to the west. Leh is also home to Hall of Fame, a museum honouring the Indian Army's courage in the Kargil conflict. The city's unique character comes from the confluence of Ladakhi, Tibetan, and Kashmiri influences felt in its food, architecture, and festivals.
